Police checkpoint leaves 2 facing DUI charges in California

Law enforcement officers employ a variety of measures in an attempt to cut down on driver impairment. In some cases, authorities may set up temporary DUI checkpoints, and those who encounter these checkpoints may be uncertain of their rights and how best to handle the situation. Several drivers were given citations at a recent checkpoint in California that also left two individuals facing DUI charges.

Authorities say the checkpoint was set up on a recent Friday night and lasted until the early hours of Saturday morning. Police claim to have screened as many as 1,500 vehicles during these hours and they assert the process led to citations for as many as 11 drivers. Although many of the details concerning the methods used in determining impairment remain unclear, the checkpoint also led to the arrest of two individuals who now face charges for drunk driving.

When approaching similar checkpoints, all drivers have rights that must be upheld throughout the process. Going through a DUI checkpoint can be an intimidating process, as authorities may be more inclined to suspect the presence of impairment. Individuals who stand accused of driving under the influence under similar circumstances may wish to prepare for what comes next by focusing on their defense, but they might need guidance in navigating the process.

Those who face DUI charges after going through a drunk driving checkpoint could benefit from seeking advice as soon as possible. By speaking with an attorney, a person in California could obtain much-needed guidance on the consequences he or she may face and advice on how best to proceed. An attorney can work toward protecting a client's legal rights and assist him or her in pursuing the best outcome achievable during subsequent court proceedings.
