A decline in divorce rates might not mean couples are happier

Going through a major life change can be a scary experience, and some individuals in California may seek to prevent such a change out of fear of what they might lose in the process. While this might be true of a variety of scenarios, studies indicate it is a common concern for individuals who are facing a divorce, especially millennials. Although reports suggest that divorce rates among this age group are on the decline, the decision to stay together might not always be made with happiness in mind.

Studies suggest that the current divorce rate in the nation sits at just under 40 percent, and is even lower for millennials. Reports indicate that individuals in this age group are 18 percent less likely to part ways. However, this doesn't necessarily mean these couples are happier on average, as studies indicate that there are additional factors that might be influencing their decisions.

These studies indicate that some of the reasons couples are choosing to remain together pertain to Social Security survivor benefits and concerns over how the stress of divorce will affect their health. Experts also indicate that many couples may decide to stay married for the sake of the kids. However, while these may seem like potential benefits, remaining in an unhappy relationship can be harmful at times, and divorce might be the healthiest path for all parties involved.

The fear of the unknown can influence a person's decisions substantially. Those who wish to know more about what to expect from divorce and how their lives may change once the process is finalized could benefit from consulting with a family law attorney for guidance. An attorney can help a client in California better understand the process and assist him or her in making informed decisions regarding the future during legal proceedings.
